HR advisory services is a form of consultancy that specifies the purpose and intent towards providing HR advice to clients. A professional who heads such a department is called an HR consultant.

The HR function has been accepted as one of the integral functions in all organizations, today. The HR manager , thus becomes responsible for all activities related to people at work – from hiring personnel, managing their welfare to facilitating promotions or exits within the organization. Hr consultants work closely with clients to understand their hr needs and provide practical advice on how they might be addressed. Clients seek hr advice for various reasons which include getting feedback on current practices, implementing new strategies within the organization, seeking ideas for cost-cutting , downsizing etc., understanding the implications of certain decisions on people's performance , future hiring opportunities etc. a result, hr managers have to possess certain qualities to survive the hr consulting world.

HR managers who are planning to join hr consulting can do so immediately after they have acquired a degree in hr management. HR professionals looking for on-job HR training may prefer to start off as an HR administrator and gain on-the-job experience before going on to become a HR consultant.

There is no specific qualification required for becoming a HR consultant; however, experts suggest that HR professionals with degrees in external disciplines such as law , business administration etc. might find it easier to break into this field. In general, one must possess sound knowledge of hr theory & practices including those related to compensation & benefits, recruitment, employee relations , performance management etc., with strong interpersonal skills that enable him to understand hr problems faced by an organization and suggest effective hr solutions.

A hr consultant may be required to possess knowledge about hr software that are relevant within the hr industry/organization he is consulting for; however, this depends on his area of specialization. For instance, hr-related issues facing organizations in the mining industry might require hr consultants with expertise in safety laws , while hr managers working in manufacturing or services sector will need hr consultants who have sound knowledge of training & development , compensation management etc. Apart from these technical skills, a hr consultant should also possess certain personal qualities so as to succeed in the field.

HR professionals planning to become hr consultants must be good communicators who can present their ideas effectively to clients while maintaining positive client relationships.
